How does a Ball Valve function & what are its disadvantages?

Choosing the right valve is important for your business. It can make a huge impact on efficiency and profitability. A ball valve generally functions as a quarter-turn valve that works in controlling flow through a hollow, perforated and revolving sphere. Ball valve shares the same family as plug valves and butterfly valves.

Typically, the way a ball valve work makes it easier to understand if the valve is open or shut. The handle that operators use to regulate where the sphere is aligned with the flow. This is when the valve is open and it is perpendicular when the valve is closed.

Anyhow, ball valves are not ideal for controlling applications, as they do not allow for very fine control of flow. Hence, if you are looking to slow the flow of fluid, a ball valve won’t be a good choice.

Ball valves are also not multipurpose. Thicker liquids also make it difficult for the valve to open and close. Hence, it causes its lifespan to reduce rapidly due to its wear and tear. Besides that, using a ball valve in a high-velocity flow situation can also cause problems, as the ball valve function is not premeditated to resist this level of pressure and can cause a lot of erosion, fast.

How do I choose the right ball valve?

If the function of ball valve is not as per the needs of your business requirements, then it’s time to be hands-on and invest in a valve that works. We at EC Pneumatic & Hardware are happy to work with customers in providing the right ball valves that are long-lasting and efficient.
