How to select the right component for your pneumatic system?

 Pneumatic systems as a whole can be simple, but it can be illusory when it’s time to select the right component. For example, there any thousands of sizes, types, models , and variations of cylinders, valves, FRLs, fittings etc. So how do you know what is right for your application? Besides, taking the time to select the right component for the job will ensure lower expenses, good performances, enhanced cycle rates and prolong equipment life.

In this article, we will discuss a few considerations that is helpful when selecting the right components for the pneumatic system.

Compressed Air Supply

It’s important to ensure proper system operations by having an adequate sizing of compressor and feed lines. Consistent plant air pressure with the right flow allows pneumatic devices to operate as designed, meanwhile low or varying air pressure negatively affects the final product and machine’s sequence. Hence, insufficient capacity at the air compressor or undersized plant air supply tubing is a pretty common issue and to look out for.

Controlling pneumatic air flow

Once the correct pneumatic system air pressure and flow are established, plant supply air should be connected to a manual, lockable air dump at each point. A filter regulator should be mounted at the air dump valve. The filter functions in removing dust particles and water that can cause wear and operation problems for pneumatic system components. A regulator is essential to throttle to the design air pressure at the use point, characteristically 60 to 90 psi, as the plant air supply is typically higher, about 100 to 130 psi. Operating at the design pressure as opposed to plant pressure will decrease wear on pneumatic components.

Air control in action

A well-designed pneumatic application starts with dependable air pressure where the plant’s compressed air system connects to the machine or equipment. It’s vital for the system to start with a good air preparation setup including a locking air dump valve, a pressure regulator, an air filter, and an electrically operated soft start valve. Air from the air prep assemblage will forage into a bank of solenoid valves. Meanwhile, cylinders are essential for proper product handling. The majority of cylinders includes flow control to both ports, with the exhaust air regulated as it leaves the cylinder.

So when it comes to pneumatic system design, do look out for the common issues and make sure to supply, prep, and distribute the air well. When it’s applied well, your pneumatic device and actuators will have a long life with limited operational issues, as well as minimal required maintenance.
