Types of tubing used in pneumatic system

Flexible tubing’s are the most common method to connect pneumatic valves to cylinder, actuators and vacuum generators in modern automated equipment. If more air flow is needed, larger diameter is required. Meanwhile, hose is manufactured by adding a nylon braid between the outer and inner layers of tubing. The hose can be a rubber or even a light weight polyurethane or other materials, it’s flexible, strong and strong resistance.

How do we select the right tubing material?
There are a variety of materials used to make extruded plastic pneumatic tubing including:
– Polyurethane
– Nylon
– Polyethylene
– Teflon

One of the famous tubing are from the Polyurethane Tube range. The most eminent and common sizes for Polyurethane Tube are as below:-
– 4 MM X 2.5 MM X 1M / 20M / 50M / 100M (roll)
– 6 MM X 4.0 MM X 1M / 20M / 50M / 100M (roll)
– 8 MM X 5.0 MM X 1M / 20M / 50M / 100M (roll)
– 10 MM X 6.5 MM X 1M / 20M / 50M / 100M (roll)
– 12 MM X 8.0 MM X 1M / 20M / 50M / 100M (roll)

Polyurethane tubing (PU Tube) is strong and has a fantastic kink resistance compared to other materials. It’s one of the most commonly used tube in pneumatic and has a service temperature range from 0 – 60 Celsius. PU Tube is also water-resistant and more flexible. A variety of tubing colour and diameters are provided to help identify pneumatic circuits.

Meanwhile, PVC is not as tough as polyurethane but it can be specified for food-grade applications. It also has high flexibility and is low cost.  Nylon and polyethylene tubing uses harder plastics and are less flexible, making it a good choice for air distribution and straight run piping applications. Meanwhile, PTFE tubing has a few notable properties such as high heat resistance, good dielectric properties and excellent chemical resistance.
