understanding pneumatic air preparation in the Automation Industry

To protect all the pneumatic components in machines, processes or equipment, it’s important to have a steady supply of clean and dry air in ensuring a smooth operation.

Compressed air mainly flows via multiple devices, fittings and pipes; which can add particulates, moisture and oil. Air preparation at the machine is important if there’s a long distance from the main compressor whereby additional water or particulates could build up. This ensures the machine gets the best protection and longest possible service life.

Generally, an air preparation system must include filters, regulators, lubricators as well as manual and electrical air dumps for safety.

Ensuring Adequate Air Flow

With an adequate plant air, the pressure will drop during usage, especially when the machine requires a high airflow during operation. Hence, it’s essential to increase the size of the supply pipes as a first step to get rid of pressure sag.

It’s also advisable to have an air pressure at the input to the machine to be at 10% – 20% higher than the machine operating pressure. If the supply pipe is smaller of if there are supply pressure variations, the design guidelines was not followed.
